History

Reed Harris, Lt. General William Martin and Tom Sardy officially formed the Aspen Summer Camp for the Deaf, Inc. on October 6, 1967 with the first office located in Reed’s home in Carbondale, Colorado.  Mr. Harris, the father of a deaf son, was deeply concerned about the lack of programs available to provide productive and stimulating activities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.  In 1972, the name was changed to the Aspen Camp to reflect the educational aspects of the program envisioned.  The camp opened for the first time in 1973 with 31 children enrolled.

Mission

Aspen Camp serves the Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing community by providing high quality recreational activities and educational experiences that help and support their emotional, social, recreational and financial growth.

Vision

Aspen Camp will become the premier Deaf & Hard of Hearing Wilderness camp in the nation; known for its programs that inspire, empower and educate all those who participate.

Aspen Camp is a licensed Child Care Facility with the State of Colorado. It is available to Deaf and Hard of Hearing children nationally and internationally. The camp serves more than 100 campers, ages 8 through 18 each summer. The AC Winter Ski/Snowboard Program gives teens the opportunity to improve their skills and self-confidence and also to socialize with other Deaf & Hard of Hearing youth. In addition, AC provides retreats, sign language classes, deaf awareness activities, and outdoor education experiences.
