Language Specialist
Classification: Nonexempt (Full-Time)
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Purpose
Provide innovative leadership to guide Aspen Camp in its vision and assume responsibilities to ensure the improvement of the use of American Sign Language by participants and staff; the instruction of American Sign Language through curriculum development, instruction and outreach to participants and local community members.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop and implement plans to build partnership with parents, community, team members
- Provide information and orientation in language and communication options.
- Provide training in American Sign Language
- Provide guidance in use of American Sign Language in performing arts or literacy activities.
- Assist in translation materials for website and promotional activities.
- Refer hard-of-hearing community members to appropriate specialists.
- Establish working relationships with the board, team members, and general public
- Provide feedback to camp interpreters on a continuous basis.
- Report activities and evaluation outcomes to board on a monthly basis.
- Assist in development of ASL classes and related programs.
- Assist in curriculum development of general camp programs.
- Keep all information strictly confidential and remain neutral, except when good judgment requires discussing issues with the program coordinator, camp nurse or executive director.
- Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
- Set a good example to campers and others concerning general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
Other Job Duties
- Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.
- Assist in the planning of any special events.
- Participate in team members training.
- Other duties as assigned.
Relationships
Language Specialist must have a good relationship with their supervisors, all staff members and most importantly to community members to further in the mission and program goals of the camp.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in American Sign Language, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, Education of Deaf Students, Interpreting, or related field.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and written English; excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of Bilingual Education, hearing loss, interpreting, Deaf culture and history.
- Experience in a leadership role and public speaking.
- Educational and/or work experience with deaf or hard-of-hearing children.
- Desire and ability to work indoors and outdoors.
- Ability to communicate with peers, campers, CIT’s, staff and others while at camp.
- Ability to interact with all age levels.
- Ability to relate to peers, campers, CIT’s, staff, and others in a positive manner.
- Ability to assist with activities including overnight outings in the outdoors.
- Possess enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control and the ability to be punctual.
- Good character, integrity and adaptability.
- Emotionally mature and willing to accept responsibility.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
- Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of and experience in spoken language into American Sign Language and other manual sign systems.
- Knowledge of ethical behavior.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and history.
- Ability to communicate with campers and staff.
Physical Aspects of the Position
- Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary communication access to campers and staff.
- Ability to endure standing for long hours and doing activities such as running, bending, stooping, and stretching.
- Operate with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and varying environmental conditions.
- Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours.

- To protect the safety of our participants, team members, and community members, background checks and drug testing will be required of all hired team members. Drug testing will be randomly performed throughout programs.
